When it comes out of your pocket, you'll do things others won't.

When I was a teenager, I was riding around grandpa's farm with him on his tractor. When we came upon his bull and the neighbors bull fighting. (the fence was down) so grandpa says, "jump down and go stop them bulls from fighting!" At first, I thought he was joking but when I saw his face, I knew he was serious. I said "I'm sorry grandpa but I can't do that. Now my grandpa was a short skinny man who would have to drink a gallon of water to weigh 100 lbs. He turned off the tractor jumped down grabbed a big stick stepped between the two bulls and hit them on the head until they each went their own ways. He looked up at me still on the tractor and said, "when it comes out of your pocket, you'll do things others won't." My grandpa was wise and I learned a valuable lesson that day, when protecting your livelihood or investment sometimes you will have to go above and beyond what is normal or what others would do. Jesus also said this when he talked about the hireling in John chapter 10. The hireling flees when the wolf comes because he does not own or value the sheep. The shepherd on the other hand stays and fights the wolf off to protect what is his.
